Is FPSE Cancelled? Are you guys dead? Are you no longer supporting this asset?!?
First of all, to get that out of the way, no, FPSE is not cancelled, or 'dead' by any stretch of the imagination. Thought I might put this out there before anything, since some of you may only be here interested in knowing this simple fact.
Evening fellow Unity Developers. Or morning, wherever you may be located on this planet consisting of like-minded people like ourselves striving and going full force at our goals each and every day always having our vision imprinted in the back of our mind, driving us towards those goals we had set out.
One of our visions we've been striving for here at the asset lab for over a year now, is to empower indie game developers with AAA quality assets and game templates, to help spark a brilliant idea - and our first project revolving around this idea was FPS Essentials, catering to the ever-so popular first-person shooter genre. Also a genre of game we're quite passionate about.
Now any fellow asset developers, unity asset store publishers or anyone involved with something related, probably may have advised against taking on a project like we set out for ourselves with FPSE as our first product with all our ambitious intentions for the end-product. To be quite honest now looking back with the experience gained with all of this roller-coaster ride of a development journey, a project like that does seem like a bit too much to on a development team of 2's plate to start out with..
Do we regret investing our efforts into this project? Heck no, in fact,I feel as though this audacious starting point is really what is shaping us into the seasoned developers and business people we are becoming, ready to take on the world! Hehe
However, where we may have went a bit wrong in this whole process, is estimating how long this whole project is going to take.
Not only estimating how much time we'd need to fulfill our vision with it, but also money. Yes, we may have messed up by promising release dates and such, but let me make this clear again, this is our first ever product. This is our baby, we're just starting to understand how to handle a project like this in the future. With what we're developing, if I were to go back in time, I would have made it blatantly clear that this is going to take well over a year for the final product to finally come out.
It's funny because you reading this right now may be thinking "What are you on about?!? you literally just said 3 months ago the project is ready to go, and you just had a little bit of touching up to do!!"
You have to understand, that we here are striving for quality, and not just to finish and get a product out there, for the sake of it. Every day as we are coming up with ideas, we are continuously adding to the project, day by day. There is no set list we need to finish, but at this point we feel as though it is time to finally settle down, and get what we have out there as it's not just 'any other asset' at this point. It's something completely in a league of it's own.
Game development and design for an end-product to be used universally by other developers is not as quick of a process as one may think. Certainly not as quick of a process I presumed myself having started this. There is so much more that goes into this project that it seems on the surface. And to you people thinking that we have completely given up on this project, well to put this sweetly; we have NO OPTION but for this project to SUCCEED, otherwise over a year's worth of time, money (quite a bit of it) and effort goes completely down the drain.. Completely.
Us releasing v0.95 as a 'beta' to people willing to adopt this asset early on, with benefits like free upgrades down the road was just a start to our vision with this. Although it may not seem like it, I cannot even begin to explain how much time we've put into this project, so I guess if you just take a step to understand where I'm coming from here, you can start to understand why seeing such negative comments completely opposing the reality of how things are shaping up, deeply annoys me. Which leads me to;
Where did the forum go?
So picture this; it was a Friday night, well 3 am in the morning at this point, after having spent basically a full day working on this project, letting it fully consume my day in it's entirety, as as been the case for a while now, trying to really finish this as soon as possible, as the project is costing us more and more of our investment and time the longer it sits without its full proper release (yes believe it or not, we want to get this done as quick as you do, if not quicker). Was quite a productive day mind you, managed to finish some documentation video content, sound engineering and environmental props, as I was depriving myself of sleep working like a crazy night owl in the middle of the night on a texture for a specific prop to be included in the update, I I got a notification on my phone to find a quite, not so pleasant comment on the FPSE video, of someone basically bashing us for 'not working hard enough' and being 'lazy' killing off this project. And I'm sitting here, remember a full day of devoting my life and energy to please people like this guy (and make a success out of this business idea for ourselves) and I'm sitting here almost falling asleep busting my ass only to find someone to complement that with a wonderful comment like that. As you can imagine, I was just thinking, "why am I even bothering with this.." I proceeded to check out our forum we've provided to you guys to create a cool little community around our products (I'll be honest, at this point I have not really been to active with checking the forum too much lately) only to find out that the YouTube comment I received 10 minutes ago was being nice compared to the witch hunt going on within our own client base, on our forums. I understand that there may be some negativity floating around the community with a mixture of our lack of communication, and lengthy wait for the arrival of the update, but the level of disrespect and inconsideration shown within the community was nothing positive to keep around as we were tirelessly working on this darn project. So we decided it would be in our best interest to temporarily suspend the forum, until it would be productive to continue it, having released the new version, with plenty of new things to discuss in the community. For now, all we say were people complaining and condemning us. Which you can do, and I totally see where you are coming from, but you need to understand, that wasn't our intention with starting up the forum, and I hope you can understand that too.
We're working tirelessly with our full efforts every day to create something amazing. Something revolutionary to game development. And although we may have had a rocky start in it's infancy stages, we are glad to have you guys on this journey with us, and hope you are here to stay on the long-run!
Keep your eyes peeled for an email for us soon for instructions on getting your asset-store upgrade to v1 (if you are currently a customer to the v0.95 Beta)
